Amedisys names Chris Gerard new CEO

Amedisys President and Chief Operating Officer Chris Gerard will succeed Paul Kusserow as CEO effective April 15, the for-profit home health and hospice provider announced Monday.

Kusserow will remain chairman of the company’s board and Gerard will join the panel, according to an Amedisys news release.

“Having the opportunity to be part of and lead Amedisys for the past seven years has genuinely been the highlight of my career. Seeing what we have built since 2014, the talent we have developed, the patients we have cared for and the quality care we have focused on and delivered has been simply astonishing,” Kusserow said in a news release.

Under Kusserow’s leadership, Amedisys added personal care, palliative care, hospital-at-home and skilled-nursing-facility-at-home services to its portfolio and revenue rose 74{f771d91d784324d4be731abc64bffe0d1fd8f26504ceb311bcfd8e5b001778f4}, according to the company. Amedisys was one of Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work in 2021.

‘Deltacron’ likely result of lab error: experts

Experts said Monday that an alleged hybrid coronavirus mutation dubbed “Deltacron” reportedly discovered in a Cyprus lab is most likely the result of a lab contamination, and not a new worrying variant.

Cypriot media reported the discovery Saturday, describing it as having “the genetic background of the Delta along with some of the mutations of Omicron”.

While it is possible for coronaviruses to genetically combine, it is rare, and scientists analysing the discovery of so-called “Deltacron” say it is unlikely.

“The Cypriot ‘Deltacron’ sequences reported by several large media outlets look to be quite clearly contamination,” Tom Peacock, a virologist with the infectious diseases department at Imperial College London, tweeted over the weekend.
